A Word About AI & Therapy

A Word About AI and Therapy

AI can be useful. It can help organize thoughts, explain information, generate questions, and sometimes help you look at something from a different angle.

But it cannot replace psychotherapy.

Therapy happens in relationship. A human therapist notices tone, pauses, contradictions, body language, what is said, and what is not said. I bring clinical knowledge, intuition, judgment, and my own human perception into the room with you.

For me, there is also something about therapy that cannot be reduced to information or technique. Whether you call it presence, connection, intuition, or soul, it matters.

AI can also be limited by what you give it. If you describe a situation from only one perspective, it may respond within that perspective rather than challenge what may be missing, distorted, or assumed. It can be made more useful by asking it to question your assumptions, consider other viewpoints, and tell you where your thinking may be incomplete.

AI can help you think, but it should not replace your own judgment, perceptions, or conversations with people who know the situation firsthand.

AI can also be wrong. It may misunderstand context, invent information, or present something uncertain with remarkable confidence. That matters when the subject is your mental health, medication, diagnosis, or safety. I would treat AI as a tool, not as an authority.

There are also forms of therapy that AI cannot do. It cannot physically observe, pace, and participate in the kind of embodied emotional and energetic release work that sometimes becomes part of therapy in my office.

And if you are in a serious crisis, AI is not a substitute for immediate human help or emergency care.

If something you read or discuss with AI feels important, bring it with you. We can look at it together and decide what is useful.
